El consumo moderado de alcohol podría prevenir la artritis

Todavía no se conoce qué cantidad de alcohol podría ser necesaria para los humanos con el fin de prevenir la artritis reumatoidea, pero en un estudio publicado en las Actas de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias de Estados Unidos afirma que los ratones que durante un tiempo tomaron agua con un 10% de alcohol, redujeron el riesgo de sufrir dicha enfermedad.

La artritis reumatoidea es una enfermedad crónica que produce la inflamación del tejido que recubre las articulaciones (sinovio) causando dolor y limitando los movimientos, afecta a diferentes articulaciones del cuerpo y los síntomas pueden durar mucho tiempo o ser esporádicos, según la gravedad de la artritis producirá más o menos daños. De momento no se conoce cómo prevenirla, lo que sí es muy importante, es realizar un diagnóstico temprano par poder evitar que progrese la enfermedad.

En la investigación, realizada en la Universidad de Gotenburgo, en Suecia, se administraron inyecciones de colágeno a los ratones para provocar la artritis reumatoidea, seguidamente se les dio agua con un 10% de alcohol puro durante ocho semanas y el resultado fue que la artritis reumatoide se desarrolló más despacio en estos ratones, además, una vez que la enfermedad empezó a progresar, los síntomas eran más suaves.

Según los investigadores, el alcohol puede estimular la producción de testosterona, que restringe la liberación de las proteínas que causan la inflamación (citoquinas), a su vez, el proceso del alcohol en el organismo, transformándose en acetaldehído, puede otorgar similares efectos protectores.
Siendo éste un estudio preliminar, de ser confirmado el posible efecto beneficioso en la artritis de seres humanos, barajan la posibilidad de utilizar acetaldehído de forma terapéutica ya que no es adictiva como el alcohol.

La doctora Patricia Vélez de la Asociación Colombiana de Reumatología afirma que de momento no se ha constatado la relación real entre el consumo moderado de alcohol y la prevención de la enfermedad, a lo que hay que añadir que muchas de las personas que sufren artritis reumatoide son pacientes que están medicados por esta u otras patologías, lo que sería contradictoria la ingesta de alcohol.

Sería ideal que pronto anunciaran terapias eficaces para prevenir una enfermedad que limita a muchas personas, entre las que prevalecen las mujeres.

En votación dividida Senado le pide a la Presidenta Bachelet que se pronuncie sobre el tema del aborto en Chile

Con 12 votos a favor, 5 en contra y 3 abstenciones la Cámara Alta aprobó proyecto de acuerdo donde le solicitan a la Mandataria que explicite que no existirá en la agenda legislativa una iniciativa sobre la materia.

Con los votos en contra de los senadores socialistas, las abstenciones de los miembros de la Mesa y del senador Roberto Muñoz Barra, el Senado aprobó un proyecto de acuerdo en el que le solicitan a la Presidenta Michelle Bachelet que emita un pronunciamiento respecto del tema del aborto en Chile.

 

El texto legal -que fue presentado luego que dos diputados pusieran el tema en la agenda legislativa a través de un proyecto de ley para despenalizar el aborto- fue respaldado por los senadores de la Alianza, Carlos Cantero, Andrés Chadwick, Juan Antonio Coloma, José García, Carlos Kuschel, Hernán Larraín, Pablo Longueira, Evelyn Matthei, Víctor Pérez, Baldo Prokurica, Sergio Romero y por el demócrata cristiano, Hosaín Sabag.

 

Se abstuvieron el Presidente y Vicepresidente del Senado, Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle y Jaime Naranjo, respectivamente, además del senador Roberto Muñoz Barra; mientras que los senadores socialistas Camilo Escalona, Jaime Gazmuri, Alejandro Navarro, Carlos Ominami y Juan Pablo Letelier, lo votaron en contra.

 

Este último consultó si se le puede hacer un “emplazamiento” de ese tipo a la primera autoridad del país.

 

En lo fundamental, el proyecto le pide a la Mandataria “que emita un pronunciamiento al país sobre el rechazo que sobre el aborto cabe plantear, de conformidad con la totalidad del ordenamiento jurídico nacional, aclarando al mismo tiempo que no existen en la agenda legislativa del Ejecutivo iniciativas o patrocinio alguno para proyectos que lo permitan, pues procede sólo su discusión de plantearse una reforma constitucional que reemplace el sustrato valórico nacional por otro diferente”.

 

Asimismo, solicita que aclare “su total y absoluta falta de disponibilidad” para patrocinar alguna moción o presentar una reforma constitucional en esa línea.

 

Entre los argumentos de la iniciativa aprobada se destaca que uno de los principios esenciales que rigen los actos del hombre es que “un fin bueno no justifica la ejecución de medios moralmente ilícitos” y que es “importante la fortaleza moral de este preámbulo frente a ciertas iniciativas parlamentarias de que se ha tenido noticia pública”, pues no se puede cambiar el ordenamiento jurídico “vulnerando flagrantemente principios constitucionales sólidos y de la más alta jerarquía, como el derecho a la vida y su protección en todas las formas”.

 

Además, señala que “el legislador debe siempre cautelar o proteger, incluso preventivamente, la existencia del ser humano que está por nacer y no decidir, como si fueran un asunto discrecional, en qué casos y excepciones, dentro de cuáles lazos, a través de qué medidas o con cuáles condiciones lo hará en la perspectiva de los valores de la civilización humanista, la que torna inconcebible defender los derechos humanos pero, a la vez, desconocer el derecho a la vida de la persona que está por nacer”.

Luego de largas reuniones, los parlamentarios decidieron aceptar que la iniciativa sea discutida en la Cámara.

Adoptando una posición diametralmente opuesta a la que tuvieron cuando se intentó legislar sobre la eutanasia, la bancada de diputados DC se abrió ayer a someter a trámite el proyecto de ley que busca despenalizar el aborto.

El acuerdo fue alcanzado en el Congreso luego de una serie de reuniones en las que se trató el tema y en las que finalmente se decidió poner los 21 votos del grupo parlamentario para cuando la testera de la corporación someta a votación -lo que podría ocurrir hoy- la admisibilidad del texto presentado la semana pasada por los diputados PS Marco Enríquez-Ominami y el PPD René Alinco.

"Después de un largo debate al interior de nuestra bancada decidimos enviarle una señal a la ciudadanía de que el Congreso es un lugar de debate y que nosotros no podemos restarnos a eso", dijo el jefe de los diputados DC, Pablo Lorenzini.

Tanto al interior del grupo de legisladores como en el propio partido, la postura tomada en mayo pasado -cuando, sumándose a una inicativa de la Alianza, amenazaron con censurar a la mesa si se tramitaba un proyecto sobre la eutanasia- fue muy evaluada porque se consideró que la colectividad dio la señal de que vetaba temas sin siquiera darse el tiempo para debatirlos.

Es por esto que ahora se optó por esta señal de apertura y tolerancia, de la cual incluso se hizo parte la timonel de la tienda, Soledad Alvear, quien tras ser informada por Lorenzini de la decisión que habían adoptado, la apoyó completamente.

El diputado Carlos Olivares, que en el caso del proyecto sobre la eutanasia fue uno de los que más enérgicos se mostraron a la hora de rechazar su tramitación, esta vez no tuvo problemas en expresar su abierto interés en que sí se pueda iniciar el proceso legislativo.

"Queremos que se debata porque es clave que en la Concertación empecemos a decir qué pensamos", dijo el diputado "colorín".

La resolución DC fue apludida por los promotores del polémico proyecto.

"Es un símbolo de los nuevos tiempos que estamos viviendo en el Parlamento. Aunque no estemos de acuerdo, lo que hay que hacer es legislar y después ver qué pasa", señaló Enríquez-Ominami.

En tanto, el diputado Alinco, ante la apertura DC, se mostró esperanzado en que el texto pueda llegar a convertirse en ley.

"Debemos entender que las cifras demuestran que el aborto es una realidad que se hace necesaria combatir con el objeto de regular su práctica y evitar así las altísimas tasas de mortalidad asociadas a este problema en la actualidad", sostuvo.

En todo caso, aunque los diputados DC se abrieron a tratar el proyecto, anunciaron desde ya su rechazo a que llegue a materializarse como ley, lo que hace prever que no prosperará, ya que en el PPD y en la Alianza tienen la misma postura.

Madrid, 25 de octubre de 2006. “El médico debe adaptarse a la situación actual sin renunciar a la búsqueda de la excelencia, su santo y seña a lo largo de la historia”, ha destacado el Profesor Diego Gracia, presidente de la Fundación de Ciencias de la Salud, en el VIII Ateneo de Bioética, celebrado esta mañana en Madrid y organizado por la Fundación de Ciencias de la Salud y el Instituto de Prevención, Salud y Medio Ambiente de la Fundación MAPFRE, cuyo objetivo es la promoción de la investigación, la docencia y la divulgación en salud.

El acto ha intentado dilucidar el futuro de la profesión médica, respondiendo a preguntas tales como ¿salen los médicos postgraduados con el bagaje humanístico y técnico suficiente? o ¿cuál es el papel de la compasión, la empatía, el respeto y la confianza en un sistema sanitario?

El Profesor Gracia se ha referido a la gestión como el principal obstáculo con el que suele encontrarse el médico a la hora de ejercer su profesión: “No es fácil cumplir con el doble objetivo de buscar el bien del paciente y contener los costes sanitarios”, ha explicado. A esto se une el hecho de que “la población es cada vez más exigente con el sistema sanitario”.

Bajo el título “El nuevo profesionalismo: el médico que deseamos para el siglo XXI”, el VIII Ateneo de Bioética ha puesto de manifiesto el importante cambio experimentado por la profesión médica en las últimas tres décadas. Además de la desaparición de la paternalista figura del médico tradicional, “la conversión de este profesional en un asalariado suele colocarle en situaciones muy comprometidas”, como las provocadas por la necesidad de ahorrar recursos.

El debate se ha realizado en dos partes. En la primera se ha escenificado una representación teatral de 50 minutos de duración que resucita a tres grandes filósofos del pasado, que representan la ética utilitarista (John Stuart Mill), la maduración ética (Lawrence Kohlberg), y la voluntad y libertad del hombre autónomo (Friederich Nietzsche).

Desde estas tres ópticas, “se analizan los retos de una sociedad consumista para la que la enfermedad es cada vez menos aceptable, llegando a ver la muerte no como nuestra realidad más ineludible, sino como una mera posibilidad, remota y abominable”, ha dicho el Dr. Francesc Borrell, médico de familia y coautor de la pieza teatral.

“Un médico optimista, dotado de compasión y empatía, y con una buena preparación técnica, gusta de inmediato y genera confianza”, ha resaltado. En la jornada se han señalado como principales obstáculos de su quehacer diario la falta de tiempo y la sobrecarga de trabajo. “Cuando una institución trata mal a sus empleados, éstos hacen lo mismo con la población”.

En respuesta a una “creciente medicalización” de la vida, también se han apuntado tres retos para la profesión médica del siglo XXI: “no permitir que sólo las instituciones dicten las reglas del juego, definir con valentía el perfil del médico del futuro, y perseverar en que los cuidados de salud y las innovaciones alcancen a todas las clases sociales”, ha enumerado.
